Pushing yourself to learn that new skill might be the reason you become the person you are searching for, but for some reason you just can’t be bothered to take up any new skills or advance your current knowledge. For most people you have to keep learning in order to be your best self, and to achieve a life that you are proud of. When you stop learning for good you take a downward spiral, but don’t just take it from me, take it from this genius:
“Once you stop learning, you start dying” -Albert Einstein
Find your reason why
Hone in on a reason to start pushing your knowledge on a certain subject, and then remind yourself of that every day. Especially on the the hard days, make sure you revisit why you chose to start. Rededicate yourself knowing that you made the right decision in the first place. You just have to follow through. When you are self-conscious, revisit the dream. When you are bored, revisit the dream. When you feel like you can’t possibly continue, revisit the dream.
Budget your resources
One of the biggest reasons people quit is running out of resources. Here are a few examples of resources you don’t want to run out of:
- Time
- Money
- Confidence
If you are betting everything you have in one of these categories on a small milestone in your journey, you had better be very sure of yourself. If you lose you are going to put a huge wall in the way of reaching your main goal. If you are still trying to figure things out I would recommend taking smaller calculated risks with your resources and watching the benefits of those risks compound over time.
learn by doing/get a coach
Get your hands dirty and try the skill you are learning about. Reading and watching videos on your subject is great, but eventually you reach a point where you have enough information to start, and you just have to get after it. It’s important to keep up to date on the latest info in your field, for sure, but make sure you are a practitioner not just a scholar.
If you want to skip some of the trial and error that comes with learning a skill by yourself, and you have extra cash, deploy the tried and true method of: Find someone who is better and pay them to teach you. Not everyone can afford it, and it’s not always necessary, but hiring a coach can help smooth some of the bumps in the road and get you where you want to be faster.
Take care of yourself physically
If you are going to be pushing yourself on a daily basis your body is going to need to be in relatively good shape to keep up with your will. Make sure you are getting an adequate amount of these necessities:
- Water
- Sleep
- Exercise
There are more than just these three to worry about, but these are some of the most important to pay attention to. Not getting enough of any of the mentioned requirements will lead to your brain and body degrading over time relative to how hard you are working. What’s more, is not having these things makes it much harder to stay motivated, so you will need a lot more discipline to get through basic parts of your day. Upkeep your body so you can have more good days than bad.
It’s going to suck at some point
If you want to be truly great at anything you are going to reach a time where things just seem to get worse every day, and your belief wavers. You will not be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and you will feel like you are going to fail, never to see what it would have been like. If you are in this place right now know that you are almost to the light! You can see it yet because it is obscured, but it is right ahead of you. Push through that pain an suffering and you will finally begin to feel good about what you have dedicated yourself to! And it only goes up from there.
